Omega 3 is a member of the Essential Fatty Acids family (EFA). Unsaturated fatty acids can be divided into two categories, omega -6 EFA and omega -3 EFA, including eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA ) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). This last group of acids has a large influence on the human body (cardiovascular system, brain function, metabolic processes). DHA has a very important role during human gestation and lactation.

In theory, a person should be able to synthesize omega-3 EPA and DHA from dietary omega-3 ALA (alpha-linolenic acid - located in dark green vegetables). In practice, this process is inefficient. Researchers concluded that omega-3 EPA and DHA should be taken with food supplements. High quality of the fish oil (mainly obtained from liver, flesh) is one of the sources of EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids. The oil can be mainly obtained from fish found in the cold waters of the sea, such as tuna, salmon, anchovies but also cod, shark, sardine.
